can cats eat watermelon

A small piece of watermelon flesh will not hurt a healthy cat, so long as you keep it to crumbs and take out the parts that can. As with every fruit, the honest headline is the same: your cat cannot taste the sweetness that makes watermelon worth eating, so this is a novelty, not a treat. But if your cat is drawn to it, here is how to share safely.

the flesh is fine, in tiny amounts

The pink flesh of a watermelon is not toxic to cats, and it is mostly water, which is where any faint appeal lies: a cat interested in watermelon is usually interested in the moisture more than anything. A little cube of seedless flesh, now and then, is harmless to a healthy adult cat. Keep the portion genuinely small, because watermelon is high in sugar a carnivore does not need, and too much can loosen a cat's stomach or, made a habit, pad it out. This is a crumb-sized indulgence, not a bowlful.

the seeds and the rind are the parts to remove

Two bits are worth keeping away from the cat. The seeds, both the hard black ones and the pale immature ones, are a choking and gut-blockage risk in a small animal and are best removed entirely, so stick to seedless flesh or pick them out. The rind, the pale and green outer layer, is tough, hard to digest and can cause an upset or a blockage, so that goes in the bin, not the cat. Give only the soft inner flesh, seed-free, in a small piece, and the risks fall away.

the verdict

Watermelon is a safe-ish curiosity: harmless as an occasional crumb of seedless flesh, useless as nutrition, and invisible as a flavour to an animal that cannot taste sweet. If your cat enjoys the wet texture on a hot day, a little is fine. If it turns its nose up, that is the more sensible response, and you should respect it. Meat is the diet. Watermelon is a party trick.
