You lie down and, within moments, a cat arrives and installs itself squarely on your chest, often facing you, sometimes staring, always heavy. You cannot move, and clearly you are not meant to. There are several reasons a cat chooses this precise spot, and every one of them is a compliment, even the one that is faintly about ownership.

The plainest reason is heat. Cats are devoted to warmth, and a reclining human is a large, soft, radiating heat source, with the chest, rising and falling and close to a beating heart, being one of the cosiest parts of the whole arrangement. There is more to it than temperature, though. The steady rhythm of your heartbeat and the slow rise and fall of your breathing are deeply soothing to a cat, echoes of the earliest comfort of the nest, when it dozed against its mother and littermates to exactly this rhythm. Curling up on your chest lets the cat sync to that pulse, which is why so many of them purr themselves to sleep there. It is a cat choosing the most reassuring place it knows, and finding it on you.

The last reason is the most cat-like. By sitting on you, the cat mingles its scent with yours and lays a quiet claim: this human is taken. It is the same instinct behind rubbing against your legs, applied at closer range and greater comfort. Take none of this as an imposition, however pinned you feel. A cat that chooses to sleep on your chest is a cat that trusts you completely, finds you the safest and warmest thing in its world, and has decided, on balance, to keep you.
