The Siberian is a big, powerful, gloriously furred cat that shrugged off Russian winters for centuries and looks every bit as hardy as that history suggests. It is agile, affectionate, and dog-like in its loyalty, and it is often named among the better breeds for allergy sufferers. It scores near the top for fluff and earns it honestly. Here is the review.

Origin: Russia. An ancient natural forest breed, the national cat of its homeland.

Size: Large and muscular, with males often 6 to 9 kg. Slow to mature, up to five years.

Coat: Long, dense, triple-layered and water-resistant, thickening dramatically in winter.

Temperament: Affectionate, loyal, playful and agile. Calm but far from lazy.

Lifespan: Around 12 to 15 years.

Good for: Families and active homes with grooming time, and some allergy sufferers who test well.

what is a siberian

The Siberian is a natural breed from the forests of Russia, shaped by a brutal climate rather than by breeders, and it has been the country's cat for centuries. Everything about it speaks of hardiness: the size, the muscle, the thick weatherproof coat, and a confident, agile nature. It is a substantial, impressive animal that combines a wild look with a warm, devoted temperament.

the look

This is a large, strongly built cat under a magnificent triple coat, a dense undercoat beneath longer guard hairs, all of it water-resistant and designed for deep cold. In winter the coat thickens into a full ruff and a bushy tail, making an already big cat look enormous. That is where the fluffiness score of ninety-two comes from. The overall impression is of a powerful, rounded, forest-dwelling cat that would look entirely at home on a snowbank.

temperament: the agile companion

Despite the size, the Siberian is remarkably athletic, a strong jumper and climber that stays playful well into adulthood. It is affectionate and loyal, often following its people around and involving itself in the household, and it is generally good with children, dogs, and other cats. It is calm without being idle, and confident without being demanding. This blend of impressive looks and easy, friendly nature is exactly why the breed has spread far beyond Russia.

care and health, the honest part

That triple coat needs regular grooming, brushing a few times a week most of the year and daily during the heavy seasonal moults, when the winter coat comes out in quantity. On allergies, the Siberian is frequently cited as lower in the Fel d 1 protein that triggers reactions, and many sufferers tolerate it better, but this varies cat to cat and no cat is truly hypoallergenic, so always spend time with an individual first.

On health, the breed is generally robust but can carry a risk of a heart condition seen in many pedigrees, and responsible breeders screen for it. As always, buy from a reputable, health-testing breeder or adopt and keep up with veterinary care.

is a siberian right for you

If you want a large, striking, affectionate cat that is playful and loyal and can cope with a busy family home, the Siberian is an excellent choice, provided you commit to the grooming its coat demands. It is a particularly interesting option for allergy sufferers who have tested well with a specific cat. It is not the breed for someone unwilling to brush a big coat or manage a heavy moult.

the chairman's verdict

Eighty-five. The Siberian matches the great fluffy giants for coat and presence while adding real agility and a warm, loyal nature, and it earns a quiet bonus for being kinder to some allergy sufferers. A magnificent, hardy, good-natured cat. High marks. Buy the brush.
