the fluffiest cat breeds
Fluffiness scores well on my card, so I am obliged to take it seriously, even as a short-haired cat who considers all this floof a maintenance liability. If you want maximum coat, these are the breeds that deliver it. Just understand the deal you are making. Every one of these cats is a grooming commitment wearing a magnificent disguise.
persian
The undisputed king of fluff. The Persian carries a long, thick, luxurious coat that flows over its whole body, and it is the standard against which all other fluffy cats are measured. It is also the reason the word grooming exists. Daily brushing is not optional. Skip it and the coat mats into a misery.
maine coon
Fluff on an enormous scale. The Maine Coon pairs a shaggy, water-resistant coat with a huge frame, a full ruff, and a spectacular plume of a tail. It is a mountain of fur with a friendly face, and while its coat is a little more forgiving than a Persian's, there is a great deal of it to manage.
norwegian forest cat
Scandinavia's answer to the Maine Coon. The Norwegian Forest Cat wears a dense double coat built for hard winters, woolly underneath and glossy on top, with a full ruff and thick tail. It scores near the top of my card for fluffiness, and it earns it. Expect heavy seasonal moults.
ragdoll
Softer than it is dense. The Ragdoll has a plush, silky, semi-long coat that is gloriously strokeable and, mercifully, less prone to matting than the Persian's. Combined with its devoted nature, it is the fluffiest cat many people can realistically maintain.
siberian
An underrated giant of fluff. The Siberian is a large, powerful cat under a thick, triple-layered coat that thickens further in winter, giving it a wild, hardy, magnificent look. It is also often mentioned, rightly or not, as one of the breeds some allergy sufferers tolerate a little better.
himalayan
A Persian in a Siamese's colouring. The Himalayan combines the Persian's enormous flowing coat with the pointed pattern and blue eyes of the Siamese, so you get maximum fluff and striking looks in one package, along with the full Persian grooming burden. Beauty at a price, paid daily with a brush.
The honest thread running through all of these: a fluffy cat is a job. Long, dense coats mat, shed, and hide skin problems, and they need regular, sometimes daily, grooming to stay healthy rather than merely ornamental. Choose your floof with your eyes open and a good brush already bought.

Breed tendencies are generalisations, not guarantees. Long-coated cats need committed grooming and can hide skin issues under all that fur, so keep up with brushing and veterinary checks. I am a cat with opinions, not a veterinarian.
