A warning before we begin. Affection in a cat is earned, not bought, and any individual can defy its breed entirely. I have known aloof Ragdolls and devoted moggies. But some breeds are more inclined toward soppiness than others, and if a clingy, doting cat is what you want, these are the ones to look at. Ranked by warmth, judged without envy.

ragdoll

The obvious champion. The Ragdoll was practically built for cuddling, going limp with pleasure when picked up and following its people from room to room like a large, floppy shadow. If you want a cat that actively seeks your lap and stays there, start here.

maine coon

Proof that size and softness go together. The Maine Coon is enormous and gentle with it, a friendly, dog-like giant that trails its humans, chirps for attention, and involves itself in everything. Devoted without being needy, which is a rare balance.

siamese

The Siamese bonds hard and tells you about it, loudly and often. It wants to be with its person constantly, riding shoulders, sleeping under covers, and holding lengthy conversations. This is affection with a running commentary. Not for those who want quiet.

sphynx

The Sphynx is famously the velcro cat. Hairless and always seeking warmth, it presses itself against you at every opportunity and demands to be involved in your life. What it lacks in coat it makes up for in sheer clinginess.

burmese

Less famous than the others, but among the most people-loving cats going. The Burmese stays kittenish and devoted for life, craving company and lap time, and it does not cope well with being left alone all day. A true companion breed.

persian

The Persian shows affection the aristocratic way, choosing a favourite lap and settling into it for a serene, undemanding cuddle. It will not chase you around the house, but once it has decided you are worthy, its devotion is quiet and total.

The pattern here is worth noting. The most affectionate breeds tend to be the ones that struggle most with being left alone, so a doting cat is also a dependent one. Affection is a two-way arrangement. If you want a cat that adores you, be ready to be present for it.
